IP geolocation maps an IP address to an approximate physical location using databases compiled from regional internet registries and ISP records. Results include country, region, city, coordinates, timezone, and network provider.

Common uses include fraud detection (flagging transactions from unexpected locations), content localization, enforcing regional licensing restrictions, and tracing network routing issues.

Keep in mind: results reflect the ISP's infrastructure location, not the end user's exact position. VPNs, proxies, and Tor can obscure actual locations. This tool provides the best available geolocation data for any IP.

What IP geolocation estimates

Geolocation maps an IP address to an approximate country, region, city, ISP/ASN, and timezone using commercial and public datasets. It is widely used for fraud signals, content localization, and incident response — with the understanding that results are probabilistic, not GPS-precise.

When to look up an IP

  • Investigating suspicious login or form spam sources
  • Checking whether a CDN or VPN egress matches expectations
  • Validating that geo-restricted content rules see the right country
  • Enriching server logs during an incident timeline

How to read the fields

Country-level data is usually reliable; city-level can be wrong for mobile carriers and anycast IPs. ASN/ISP tells you who announces the address — useful when correlating with traceroute. A VPN or corporate egress can place a user “in” a data-center city far from their real location.

Common mistakes

  • Blocking entire countries based on a single noisy IP sample
  • Treating city accuracy as courtroom-grade evidence
  • Forgetting that cloud provider IPs geolocate to the provider’s region, not the end user

Example scenario

Checkout fraud spiked from one ASN. Geolocation + ASN grouping showed a cluster of cloud VPS addresses, not residential ISPs. Rate-limiting that ASN and requiring extra verification cut chargebacks without blocking the merchant’s real customer countries.
